When Titan Solutions’ storage experts were approached by one of the top three wireless telecommunications providers in the nation, they learned the client—which operates in all 50 states and maintains more than 2,500 local branches and wireless dealers—had a booming business but an inadequate backup solution. “With three data centers running a variety of operating systems, the Wireless giant had outgrown its existing Veritas backup solution, which took more than 15 hours to perform a full backup,” Titan CEO Austin Heath explains of the client’s challenge.
THE SOLUTION began with displacing the existing Veritas software with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, or TSM, a system whose success was pioneered by Titan. TSM was architected and deployed on three data centers in three different cities, backing up more than 100TB of changed data daily. The solution is 100 percent LAN-based and employs seven IBM P550 servers with DS8000 and LT04 storage hardware. “Beyond improving backup and restore times for this client, the new system reduces overhead costs, while improving customer satisfaction,” Heath says of the incremental backup technology that accelerates backup and restore processes.
Because bare-metal restores are now possible for the client, the system provides greater flexibility when installing new hardware. With fewer tapes and a larger tape library, more backups can be kept online for rapid recovery.
